Subsurface Gas Geochemistry & Resource Assessment

Geological insight. A higher perspective.

I help explorers, investors, government agencies and tribal nations understand where helium, natural hydrogen and CO₂ come from, how they move, and where they collect. I combine field sampling, noble gas and isotope geochemistry, and quantitative modeling to make decisions that hold up.

APPROACH

Field, laboratory and model, connected end to end.

01FIELD

Plan and lead sampling campaigns: well gas, soil gas, water, core and outcrop. Collect the data the question needs, and nothing it doesn't.

02LABORATORY

Gas chromatography, isotope-ratio and noble gas mass spectrometry, with rigorous, reproducible methods and clear uncertainty.

03MODEL

Solubility, mass-balance, heat-flow and statistical models that turn measurements into source, migration and accumulation estimates.

04ADVISE

Plain-language findings, maps and recommendations that clients and communities can act on, with the limitations stated.

SELECTED WORK

Research and applied projects across the western US and Canada.

HELIUM · FOUR CORNERS

High-helium reservoirs of the Colorado Plateau

Navajo Nation, Four Corners area

Secured US $80,925 to fund noble gas isotopic analysis of helium wells. Identified the sources and controls on high-helium reservoirs to inform resource decisions.

HELIUM · HEAT FLOW

How Yellowstone's heat releases crustal helium

Greater Yellowstone region

Combined noble gas isotopes and heat-flow modeling to show how a major thermal anomaly mobilizes helium from the crust, with direct implications for exploration near intrusions.

Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (2025) · doi
EXPLORATION MODELING

Probabilistic targeting of helium-rich gas fields

Statistical exploration models

Quantified the role of faults and intrusions in helium-rich fields, and paired soil-gas geochemistry with geological and geophysical data to build statistical helium exploration models.
